WARRIOR WOMEN: YOU GOT THE POWER

This week sees the opening of iconic photographer Kate Garner’s Warrior Women exhibit in London. Who got the power? Women like Kate Moss, Sinead O’Connor, Patti Smith, Bjork. Here the woman behind the camera tells us how to access the warrior energy in you.

WHAT GIVES A WOMAN HER WARRIOR POWER?
“A woman gets power when she turns anger into action. Anger usually comes when we feel powerless.  If you take action you are no longer powerless.”

WHAT IS WARRIOR POWER GOOD FOR?
“Warrior power is good because it makes you peaceful. Why? When you know you can change your circumstances, it changes the way your brain works. It reduces anxiety, which in turn helps you take bigger and braver steps. It’s a circular thing.”

HOW AND WHEN DOES THIS POWER MANIFEST IN YOU?
“My warrior power manifests every time I do something I’m afraid of.”

FOR ANYBODY FEELING LESS THAN WARRIOR-LIKE, WHAT IS THE QUICKEST WAY TO CONNECT WITH THAT POWER?

“Get quiet. Go for a walk, in nature if possible. Try and pinpoint where your fear is welling up from. Then think of an action you could take, even if it’s something tiny, which will change the circumstances that make you afraid. If you can think of your fear as a friend who is trying to tell you something that is going to help you, THEN you can get quiet and listen as that friend advises you on what action to take. The action itself might make you more afraid, but if you can remain calm and trust yourself, you will get stronger.”

WARRIOR SUGGESTS A FIGHT – WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THESE WOMEN FIGHTING FOR?
“The ability to hear themselves among the cacophony of opinion that surrounds us all. To revel in being female.”

Warrior Women by Kate Garner runs Sept 6 – Oct 6 2013 at the Zebra One Gallery in London.
